17 Months

Gavin is into everything right now, and I love it (most of the time). I can't get over how much energy this boy has! I guess as mine is depleting with my pregnancy, he's getting more! :)

We went blueberry picking with Braden & Kate and London & Phoebe a couple of weeks ago.

Gavin is not quite old/mature enough to understand what blueberry picking is all about (yes, the tub is on his head).

Braden and Gavin decided to put dirt in their buckets instead of blueberries. Look at London's horrified face as she watches these dirty boys:
Gavin was a filthy mess by the end:

Ryan came in one day after mowing the yard and said I had to bring Gavin outside.
He had a big surprise for him:

This video cracks me up. Are we rednecks or what?

This boy loves coloring.

But he must have minimum of 3 crayons in his hand that he's not coloring with at a time! And he enjoys a crayon snack every once in a while, too.

He loves talking on the phone (except of course when you really want him to talk to his grandparents on the phone and then he just pushes buttons):

He is IN LOVE with trucks right now. Any kind of truck--particularly dump trucks, backhoes, tractors, etc. With all of my books I had from teaching, I found the perfect book for him.
It is called The Truck Book.

He asks to read it every day. Multiple times a day.

He loves pointing to the trucks throughout the book. And especially their tires:

He loves helping me water. I go outside to water our garden and he brings me this tub to fill up:
Then he waters what he thinks needs water: the wagon, rocks, Dakota, my feet...

He loves playing outside with Dakota, too. He's getting pretty good at throwing the ball for her. I love hearing him giggle when they play together:

If you remember from Gavin's newborn pictures here, he used to fit in this wagon that he now loves to pull around:

We went down to Chattanooga for my grandmother Jane's 80th birthday party.
Here are some of my favorite family pictures:
I love these pictures of Gavin with his cousins Wade and Reid. He knows he's the center of attention: clapping...
and waving to his admirers...

Fun with Unk on his red jet:
Going for a walk after dinner:
Notice who's walking who here:

Gavin climbed out of his crib and bruised himself up really good (bloody nose and huge knot on forehead and bruised lip). He had never tried to climb out before so we hadn't lowered the mattress all the way. Our fault! I think he was telling us he is ready for his big boy bed.

What a personality this boy has. If you know me well, you know I tend to overreact to things. Like if somebody tells me a shocking story I breath in very shocked--can't really describe it. Well, Gavin now does this just like me--normally in regards to food he sees that he wants really bad. Hilarious:

A few new things this month that I don't have pictures of:
1. All these pictures look sweet and happy and I'd say 80% off the time that's true. But one thing this boy has now is an attitude! If I sternly tell him no, he throws whatever is in his hand down and scrunches his nose up at me. I'm obviously too busy disciplining this boy to take a picture of that to document it. :)
2. He is waking up at 6:30 a.m. (give or take) these days. No matter how late we put him to bed. This boy used to be a 12 hour sleeper. And he's down to 1 nap most days. I miss my sleeping boy!
3. He is not a talker (oh he has his own language for sure, but not words that we can understand!). But he understands so much. The words he uses most are "truck," "that," and "dog." Only the essentials, of course!

Moo

Last Friday, a few of us went to get our free Chick-fil-A for National Cow Appreciation Day.

Gavin was worn out from swim lessons that morning that he missed the first half of it! He even slept through me putting his cow mask on:

Melanie, London, and Phoebe tagged along after swim lessons too.

When Gavin finally did wake up, he could not stop pointing to the cow and calling it a dog.
Enjoying our free meals
I don't know if Gavin will ever get to keep his toy from the kid's meals if we can turn it in for free ice cream!
Holly and Hosanna
Shannon and Libby joined us, too:

This is the best picture I could get of the 3 little ones with their matching white shirts and brown shorts!

That evening, we drove down to Chattanooga to visit with my brother and sister-in-law who had just flown in from New York--where there are NO Chick-fil-A's!! So of course, we made them dress up to get a free meal after dinner:

Thanks for playing along, guys! :)

6 Months

Really this is a week late, but better late than never! We've been cleaning out closets and rearranging rooms like crazy getting Gavin's new room ready and the nursery ready for a girl, so we've been busy busy busy!

Gavin's favorite things right now: trucks. This truck has 6 wheels for 6 months
(yes, folks, it's a stretch, but I'm running out of creativity here!)

At our 4th of July party, Lillian got some great pictures of Kim and me--we're 2 weeks apart.
We were cracking up here but I love this picture!

And here are some pictures of our sweet baby girl from last week's ultrasound
(umbilical cord is in the way on the left, but I love the right side of the picture!):

She's sucking her toes in this picture!
(Side profile, head on the right, toes up on the top left corner--you can see the bones)

When we found out Gavin was a boy, we KNEW his name was going to be Gavin Robert Hughes. This little girl? WE HAVE NO CLUE!!! We keep coming back to Eleanor Joy and calling her "Ellie" but for some reason we can't commit 100%. We do know that we love Joy for a middle name. So here are our choices so far:
Eleanor "Ellie" Joy
Taylor Joy
Henley Joy

Thoughts? Suggestions?

4th of July Weekend

We had a big weekend for the 4th! It started off Saturday night with a party at our house.
The kiddos:
Gavin loved Melanie's cookies with blue icing!
Our neighbors went crazy with decorations this year and had a balloon arch from our house to theirs (2 doors down):
These same neighbors had their ginormous Slip n Slide up again.

Gavin loved it--and held on to a bite of cookie he still had (even soaking wet):
Here he is in action with Ryan:

We didn't know how he would do with the fireworks. He LOVED them.
Didn't love them so much when they stopped (notice the attitude which is unfortunately coming out a lot these days):
He would sign for more when they would stop:

Our friends RJ and Joslynn from Chicago came down and stayed with us for the weekend. They requested Krispy Kreme donuts at the park on Sunday.
Gavin is quite a fan:

On Monday we went to the pool with Elizabeth, Braden, and Kate:
Gavin loves the water:
Ryan bought us slushies as a cool treat on a hot day:
Gavin again is a fan!

Here's a super long video for the grandmothers to see what Gavin does at the pool. He is FEARLESS. Doesn't care about going under at all because he knows we'll rescue him. So thankful for that! I also love this video because you can hear him talking/singing. He is so cute.
